Avaya takes innovation seriously—researchers at Avaya’s R&D lab boast roughly one patent every two days, totaling 180 patents filed in the past twelve months. This dedication to research was recognized by Thomson Reuters this past week, who named Avaya one of the 100 most innovative companies in the San Francisco Bay Area. The list boasts is in good company, with the likes of Apple, Google, Facebook, Yahoo, HP, Oracle, and Tesla all making the cut.
“Our engineers go to work every day, dreaming up the technologies that will enable better and more productive human engagement,” said Venkatesh Krishnaswamy, Vice President of Avaya Labs Research. “It’s incredibly exciting to be on the edge of that innovation, shaping the ways we will communicate with one another for decades to come.”
Avaya possesses over 5,500 patents, with an average filing of 200 new patents per year. Most notably, their patents feature innovative technology permitting workers to extend office calls to their mobile phone. This game changer has allowed companies across the globe to keep communications open during network outages and natural disasters.
“Many of our inventions form the foundation of modern business communications,” Krishnaswamy said. “Others are beginning to hit the market now, and will improve communication in the very near future.”
Thomson Reuters’ criteria for this year’s winning class was devised by studying the volume and success of patent filings along with the relative influence of a company’s patents—measured by the amount of times patents were referenced by other inventors. In practical terms, companies that make the Thomson Reuters’ Most Innovative list globally outperform the MSCI World Index by 6 revenue percentage points and 4.1 employment percentage points.
