Here’s how to ensure quality VoIP calls:
Choppy Sound Quality
If you experience choppy sound quality, it is likely that you don’t have enough bandwidth. This may be the fault of your internet provider, but it could also mean that there is too much traffic on your network or you have malware on your computer. To determine the source of the issue, you should turn off all other devices connected to your Wi-Fi and then test the bandwidth speed. You generally need at least 100 kbps to run a two-way call. If an anti-malware check comes back clean, you should set up your Quality of Service rule on your router to prioritize VoIP traffic.
Echoes
If you have echoes on your calls, it could be from faulty equipment or latency. If you have a headset, it could also be an issue with your Bluetooth. A corded headset will typically solve the issue if it is from your Bluetooth.
If not, it could simply be that you have the volume up too loud, and it is overpowering your equipment. If this doesn’t solve the issue, you should try unplugging and plugging the device back in. Sometimes, if you haven’t updated your equipment in a while, it could cause an echo.
Jitter
If your call quality is disrupted or just generally poor, it is probably a jitter issue. When using VoIP, you are transferring small data packets through the internet. If your network is congested, the data packets can get lost. To prevent this, you should use wired headphones, use a jitter buffer, upgrade your ethernet cable, or reduce unnecessary bandwidth use.
