Cisco released information this week regarding their updated numbers for the 2013-2018 forecast of Service Adoption and VNI Global IP Traffic. Their numbers revealed a significant growth in IP traffic globally, meaning there will be a growing demand for more IP network resources on a global level. They credit this growth to:
- Video Consumption
- Devices/Connections
- Broadband Speeds
- Network Users
Cisco also predicts that by 2018, about 52% of the world’s population will be connected to the internet. Along with the increase of internet users, networked devices and connections will increase to about 21 billion in 2018. As Cisco continues to monitor the changes in IP traffic and growth, they were able to highlight three factors that they considered surprising.
- There has been a significant shift in the way businesses and individuals stay connected by way of devices. Instead of the standard mobile phone, smartphones have been in high demand and use. Instead of using a PC or laptop in the workplace, businesses have begun to encourage the use of tablets. Machine to machine connections have also seen a rise in use. Connections such as smart meters, smart cars, and video surveillance have become more frequently used and helped to increase the growth of M2M connections.
- 4K, or UHD, video streaming has also been introduced into the market, making the future of 3D TV and HD video uncertain. Cisco predicts that by 2018, most of the video traffic and usage will be from 4K content.
- Wireless internet connections continue to grow significantly and show no signs of stopping. With this continual growth, carriers have begun to develop ways to extend the wireless network reach and to relieve some of the burden on popular 3 and 4G networks to help productivity and speed.
