A Millennial is defined as a person born between the early 1980s all the way up to the early 2000s. Known as generation Y, this group of people is starting to age and come into the work force. In fact, studies show that by 2020 about 50% of the working world will be millennials. With a new generation coming up in the world, many lifestyle changes will be coming with them. Millennials, for example, are the first generation to be introduced to technology in their childhood. Many were taught how to type and work a computer while still in grade school and are heavily dependent upon technology today. Even young children today are able to figure out a cell phone before even learning to read. With this new mindset comes new changes and millennials should have a say in future tech decisions made by their employers.
When it comes to productivity, millennials have very different habits and styles than previous generations. Since they will soon become the majority within the work force their ideas and preferred technology should be embraced. One aspect that this greatly influences is communication. The classic method has always been to provide desk phones for employees, which at the time was the most convenient way to communicate. Today people of all generations are preferring to use cell phones instead. The ease of being able to answer calls and contact others with simply internet connection no matter where you are is a great way to increase productivity and happiness among employees.
Our access to internet and easy communication also makes working outside of the office easier than ever. While the workplace used to be the only place you could find the necessary tools to complete tasks employees are now more capable than ever to get their day’s workload finished without even leaving their homes.
Millennials are now questioning traditional work practices and embracing their own tech decisions to work “smarter”, not harder.
“Millennials are familiar with working and communicating from anywhere without a major adoption curve. Ideally millennials like to work from home some days during the week, or for that matter work from anywhere (e.g. Starbucks, hotel, etc.),” stated Unified Communications Strategies contributor Stephen Leaden.
Millennials are creating their own ways of being productive and allowing them that freedom can only help. Giving them a say in a company’s tech decisions will help the business grow and adapt to these new ways of working. These up and coming workers will soon be the majority of the working world and catering to their needs will make business that much smoother in the future.
