If you run your own business, you have to have a way for customers to contact you. There’s a plethora of ways to meet this need, but at the end of the day you will need a phone (and phone number) of some kind. You may find the simplest route is to use your personal cell phone. This way, you don’t have to juggle multiple numbers or add the expense of a business phone system. However, while this may seem like the easiest method, it’s not recommended. Using your personal phone and personal number has many drawbacks, and what once seemed like a convenient idea can quickly turn into a hassle.
You don’t want to miss business calls
While a business owner would like to answer every single call that comes in, this isn’t always possible. For example, sometimes you’re on the road or asleep. Additionally, nowadays spam calls frequently come into cell phones. If you’re using your cell for personal use, you may only answer calls you recognize. If you use your personal number for business though, you’ll have to answer everything. Customers will go elsewhere if they can’t reach a business owner on the first attempt.
Unprofessionalism
Most businesses have a dedicated phone number. While it’s not impossible to get by without one, it can come off as unprofessional. Think of it from a customer experience perspective. Usually when you call into a business it is a receptionist who greets you on a business phone system.
You don’t get phone features that can assist your business
Solely using your personal number will cost you on some key features that come with a business phone system. A cloud-based phone system for example, comes with a local or toll-free phone number. You can also get voicemail, call routing, analytics, and an auto-attendant with a phone system.
You can’t balance your work-life and your personal-life
Balancing your work-life and home-life is typically a constant struggle for business owners as it is. However, it makes it nearly impossible if you use your personal number for your business. As mentioned earlier, you have to answer every call that comes into your cell phone. There isn’t really any way to distinguish what is a personal call and what is a business call. Also, usually a business wants to advertise. Whether it is Internet advertising or somewhere else, your phone number will be available to whoever the advertising reaches.
